Presentation Startup Ecosystem
• Dmitrij Kononenko (Head of Digitalization Unit, German-Russian Chamber of Commerce)
• Alexandra Bochkova (Project Manager Innovation & International Business Development, Kirovsky Zavod)
The Russian start-up ecosystem is up-and-coming. While Russia was mostly famous for its commodity-based industries in the past, now a new generation of tech entrepreneurs has evolved that try to catch up on their Western counterparts. Russia’s most successful start-ups are from the software sector, covering rather complex spheres like artificial intelligence and machine vision. In both areas the Russian start-up community has already brought up international hidden champions. The roots of their success lie in Russia’s excellent education programs in IT and software engineering, with technical universities from Moscow and St. Petersburg being among the best worldwide. On the other hand, the Russian start-up ecosystem is still relatively young, and it lacks private venture capital (VC). The Russian state is aware of this and offers help in the shape of state-owned VC funds, grants and tax benefits. Another state instrument for supporting start-ups is the establishment of huge technology parks like Moscow’s Skolkovo Innovation Center. These measures help Russian entrepreneurs not only to survive on the domestic market, but also to expand their businesses to foreign markets like Germany.

In 2018, a World Bank report indicated that Ghana sits at number 1 amongst fastest growing economies in Africa and the world with an estimated growth rate of 8.3% year-on-year.
Accra, Ghana’s economic capital, is the startup hotspot followed by Kumasi, with the second highest startup activities in the country now. According to VC4A, 71% of registered start-ups are creating jobs with an average of 8.0 fixed term employment (FTE) per start-up and up to 34% with products and services offered, relating to Information Communications Technology (ICT).
